Imlil, gateway to the Atlas Mountains
Imlil is a Berber village in the High Atlas, at about 1,740 m altitude and 65 km south of Marrakech. Surrounded by walnut and apple orchards, earthen villages clinging to the slopes and peaks that stay snowy for much of the year, it's the starting point for almost every hike to Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), North Africa's highest peak.
For most travellers it's the easiest way to experience the Atlas Mountains on a day trip from Marrakech: fresh air, alpine scenery and authentic Amazigh (Berber) culture.
How to get to Imlil from Marrakech
- Distance: about 65 km
- Drive time: about 1.5 hours, via Tahanaout and the Asni valley
- Options: shared taxi (with changes), or a private driver (easiest: pick-up at your riad, photo stops, return whenever you want)
With our private driver, the round trip for 1 to 7 people starts at €80 per vehicle.
Things to do in Imlil
1. Walk around the village (2-3h, easy)
Trails between terraced fields, walnut trees and mud-brick houses. Great for families, no special difficulty.
2. Hike to Aroumd (Aremd) (3-4h, moderate)
Perched at around 1,900 m, Aroumd is one of the valley's most beautiful villages, with open views of the Toubkal massif. You reach it on mule trails, often with a tea stop at a local home.
3. Tea and lunch with a Berber family
Mint tea, wood-fired bread, tagine: a simple, warm experience that also supports the local economy.
4. Toubkal ascent (2 days, challenging)
Start from Imlil, overnight at the refuge (around 3,200 m), summit early in the morning. For hikers in good physical condition.
Bureau des Guides in Imlil: do you need a guide?
The Bureau des Guides d'Imlil is where the valley's official mountain guides are based.
- Village walks: a guide isn't mandatory but is recommended (trails, culture, local encounters).
- Toubkal ascent: a licensed guide is mandatory inside the national park.
We can book a local guide for you in advance.
Best time to visit Imlil
- Spring (March-May): blossoming orchards, still-snowy peaks. The best time.
- Summer (June-September): much cooler than Marrakech – a great escape from the heat.
- Autumn (October-November): golden walnut trees, soft light.
- Winter (December-February): snowy scenery, but cold and roads can be difficult. Warm clothes are essential.
Practical tips
- Comfortable walking shoes and a warm layer, even in summer.
- Bring cash (dirhams): there are few ATMs.
- Ask before photographing local people.
- The region was hit by the September 2023 earthquake; villages are rebuilding, and responsible tourism directly helps local families.
